When I first heard Goldeneye was coming to Wii, I thought it was going to be a straight port, of course with slightly updated graphics, and probably motion control. Now I read that it is actually a "remake" of the game, with new characters, a slightly different story, and different game mechanics.
While the rest of the internet is in a tizzy, I think this is the best way to handle this. Here's why:
1) The first game was only an above-average FPS - it traded significantly on the multiplayer, license, and lack of competition back in the day. The core mechanics, however, could have used some work.
2) The original was released YEARS ago - The Giantbomb article notes that you can now "vault over objects" as a way that this update turns Goldeneye into another generic shooter. Wrong, it used to suck having to navigate FPS games where random curbs and boxes turned games into mazes.
3) Multiplayer today means online multiplayer - Goldeneye offered some really great split-screen, but anyone who has played Halo: CE in both split-screen and LAN party modes knows that the two are just simply different beasts. Especially if you want to have 8 people, you need to do something about it. Every time I played Goldeneye multiplayer, we had thousands of gentlemen's rules. This is because the original had issues.
4) Replay value has improved from speed run memorization - The original game had single player replay value in that people tried to memorize enemy spawns to complete speed runs through levels. I would like to think that we are beyond that in this day and age. Let's have the challenge come from better level designs or enemy AI.
5) Speaking of AI, the original's was terrible - Every time you watch a live action video of a game and they show a character running into a wall, or stuck on a fence, they are probably referencing this game.
I am really looking forward to this. I actually think the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo is the best way to play FPS games, despite the Wii's other inherent limitations. And I am getting a little tired of CoD4, so I am ready for a new FPS with online multiplayer.
